Flyer for Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Summer Undergraduate Research Program
sponsored by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
to the Departments of Biological Sciences & Chemistry, College of Science
Louisiana State University, in conjunction with funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program, is hosting summer research opportunities for eligible undergraduate students. Work will be done in established laboratories, with interaction among scientists and peers. Last year’s program included mathematics majors, physicists, engineers, and others as well as biologists and chemists. Students from backgrounds underrepresented in the sciences are particularly encouraged to apply.
Program Dates: May 13 – August 4, 2012. Participants will complete ten to twelve weeks of research during this window. Date preferences should be submitted as part of the online application and will be confirmed with research mentors and students once the selection process is complete. Top research groups often are active year-round with little or no interruption, and the longer you are able to spend on your project, the better.

Extramural Research Opportunity
Summer undergraduate research is the keystone of our HHMI Program and we are proud to have hosted hundreds of students from dozens of colleges and universities, from Stanford to Oklahoma to Morehouse to Truman State. The stand-alone summer research option is available to nonLSU students. Research opportunities can be found in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, the School of Veterinary Medicine and Pennington Biomedical Research Center and potentially any unit at LSU.

LSU Students
Intramural Research Opportunity
We offer the summer research program to LSU students and encourage applications from first year students as well as upperclassmen.
With research mentors in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and thePennington Biomedical Research Center, we stress a research-intensive track of study from the freshman year through the entire LSU career and beyond. This initial research experience can also serve as prerequisite for applying for the International and/or HHMI Investigator program, below.
International Research Opportunity
LSU undergraduates who have extensive research experience may apply to participate in a summer/fall research opportunity at one of several international laboratories, including in France, Brazil, India and South Africa. Premedical students are strongly discouraged from applying.
Please contact Dr Duran (rduran@lsu.edu) directly for information on applying for one of these opportunities.
HHMI Investigator Research Opportunity
LSU undergraduates and undergraduates who come from other HHMI Colleges programs who have extensive research experience may apply to participate in a summer research opportunity in the laboratory of an HHMI Investigator (pre meds allowed) <http://www.hhmi.org/research/investigators/>
Please contact Dr Duran directly for information on applying for one of these opportunities.
